Student Voter ID Toolkit

The Student Voter ID Toolkit addresses the complex challenge of voter ID laws that disproportionately affect college students, with an estimated 18% of citizens aged 18-24 lacking state-issued photo ID with current address and name. Developed through partnership between SLSV Coalition and VoteRiders, this toolkit provides clear, accurate, and easily accessible voter ID messaging and resources tailored specifically for student populations, particularly out-of-state students and students of color who face additional barriers.

The toolkit includes state-specific guidance through VoteRiders’ student ID landing page, pocket-sized info cards available in English and Spanish for all 50 states and DC, communications materials for spreading awareness, and direct support services including help obtaining free voter ID and transportation to government offices. The resource emphasizes that while student IDs should be acceptable voter identification, state laws vary significantly, making clear information essential for ensuring students can successfully cast their ballots.

How would a campus best use this resource?
Coalition Partners can utilize this toolkit to provide comprehensive voter ID support by accessing state-specific information through the VoteRiders student landing page, ordering and distributing free voter ID info cards on campus, using communications materials to raise awareness about voter ID requirements, connecting students directly with VoteRiders for personalized assistance obtaining IDs, and integrating voter ID education into existing voter registration and education programs. The toolkit provides both self-service resources for students and pathways for direct support when additional help is needed.
