WASHINGTON The Students Learn Students Vote (SLSV) Coalition, a nonpartisan network comprised of more than 400 national, state, and local organizations dedicated to growing the student vote, is proud to release the #StudentVote Story of Success: A narrative guide to the nationwide movement and people who have led the historic growth in student voting rates over the last six years.

In 2020, supported by a network of nonprofits, community leaders, students, and philanthropic leaders, the college student voting rate soared to a record 66%, increasing at twice the rate of the overall electorate. Since then, more than 8 million young people have become eligible to vote in the 2022 midterms, which will feature dozens of elections in which the youth vote can play a decisive role

“When a group of nonprofit organizations came together to found the SLSV Coalition in 2016, we wanted to help local leaders strengthen democracy in their communities by bringing more student voters into the democratic process,” said SLSV Coalition Co-Founder and Executive Director Clarissa Unger. “The #StudentVote Story of Success brings that process to life through the eyes of the people who created this movement and are working to grow it every day.”

Told through interviews with dozens of stakeholders at the local, state, and national level, the #StudentVote Story of Success includes a seven-part video series and narrative that focus on seven core aspects of the SLSV Coalition and #StudentVote movement:

  • Writing a New Story,” the transformation of students from a voting bloc seen as undependable by the general public to a consistent and growing force in the US electorate.
  • Thriving in Unprecedented Times,” the #StudentVote movement’s extraordinary efforts to overcome obstacles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to achieve record-breaking turnout in 2020.
  • Leading Through Collaboration,” the SLSV Coalition’s partner-first approach that centers the needs and experiences of local leaders.
  • Broadening our Reach,” the effort and emphasis placed on supporting groups that are historically underrepresented in US elections, including community colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Minority Serving Institutions.
  • Celebrating the Vote,” the reframing of democratic participation from a bureaucratic hassle to a time for community and celebration.
  • Rising in Stature,” the increased emphasis on student voting placed by leaders from the White House to college and university administrators throughout the US.
  • Strengthening Democratic Values,” how SLSV Coalition partners are helping create a lasting culture of civic engagement in college communities around the country.

These elements combine to create the most comprehensive recounting to date of a movement that has significantly impacted the US electorate – and continues to grow every day.

The SLSV Coalition thanks the dozens of people who gave their time to be interviewed for the #StudentVote Story of Success, and offers a special thank you to the members of the Story of Success working group: Common Cause Youth Programs Coordinator Franecia Moore, Student PIRGs Campus Action Organizing Director Manny Rin, Penn State McCourtney Institute for Democracy Strategic Communications Specialist Jenna Spinelle, SLSV Coalition Communications Manager Zoe Williamson, and SLSV Coalition Communications Director Danny Fersh.
