The Students Learn Students Vote (SLSV) Coalition, the largest nonpartisan network in the United States dedicated to growing college student voter participation, announced today the distribution of $478,110 in grants to colleges and universities throughout the country to fund the implementation of strategies to ask every student at their institution to register to vote ahead of the 2024 elections.

The implementation grants were distributed to campuses that participate in Ask Every Student (“AES”), the national initiative that supports college and university efforts to achieve 100% student voter registration, based on applications that detailed each institution’s plans to employ the grants in effective, innovative, and nonpartisan ways. In total, 109 different institutions received funding, including 17 community colleges, 26 minority-serving institutions, and 30 rural-serving institutions.

“As a small rural community college, identifying internal funding options for voter engagement activities can be difficult, if not impossible,” said Erich Heppner, Director of Student Life at Central Lakes College in Minnesota. “The funding we have received from SLSV through the AES Implementation Grant has proven to be transformative for our programming. We went from a small voter registration table to fully integrated strategies that put civic engagement back in the positive light it deserves. This funding has energized our student leaders to work with their fellow students so that everyone’s voice is heard.”

This year the SLSV Coalition intentionally accelerated the grant process so that funds were distributed and received in time to plan and implement nonpartisan student voter engagement strategies in the summer of 2024, ahead of the fall semester. With funding secured, campuses can plan strategies to implement the Ask Every Student framework, whether by incorporating voter registration information into core classroom curricula, helping students register during first-year orientation, or utilizing Federal Work-Study funds to employ students for nonpartisan voter engagement activities, several months ahead of Election Day 2024.

“This year’s implementation grantees represent an extraordinarily diverse and forward-thinking cohort of institutions who recognize the positive force student voters can be for our democracy,” said SLSV Coalition Co-founder and Executive Director Clarissa Unger. “These funds will help them realize their full potential as campus communities and hubs for nonpartisan civic engagement.”

About Ask Every Student

Ask Every Student (AES) is a national, nonpartisan, joint initiative of the Students Learn Students Vote (SLSV) Coalition, the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, and Voter Friendly Campus, a program of the Campus Vote Project and NASPA. AES supports higher education institutions to implement, institutionalize, and scale voter registration strategies that reach every student on campus. The program uses the framework that full student voter participation comes from integrating person-to-person nonpartisan voter registration into existing processes, such as orientation or classes – both in-person and virtually.
