New cohort will play a key role in determining national priorities and strategy for nationwide movement

The Students Learn Students Vote (SLSV) Coalition, the nationwide nonpartisan network dedicated to growing college student voter turnout, announced today the 2024 SLSV Advisory Board, a group of 16 leaders from throughout the United States who will lead nonpartisan strategies to ensure access, register, educate, and turn out students to vote throughout this year’s important election.

The 2024 SLSV Advisory Board represents the diversity of the SLSV Coalition itself and includes three college students, six individuals who support student voter engagement efforts in a staff or faculty capacity at their college or university, two representatives from leading regional and state-level advocacy organizations, one local election official, and four representatives from national nonprofit organizations that make key contributions to the overall nonpartisan student vote movement:

  • Olivia Antigua – Program Manager, ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge
  • Nicholas Crookston – Partnerships & Government Affairs Coordinator, Voto Latino
  • Mary-Pat Hector – CEO, RISE
  • Fred McBride – Senior Voting Rights Advisor, Southern Poverty Law Center
  • Cristian Núñez Ramirez – Regional Manager, Jolt Initiative
  • Benjamin Goodrich – Associate Director, Government Relations & Public Engagement – American Political Science Association
  • Loren Belew – Civic Engagement Coordinator, Wichita State University Student Engagement, Advocacy & Leadership
  • Andrew Brown – Assistant Director of Community Engagement, University of Nebraska Lincoln / Husker Vote Coalition
  • Naomi Cohen – Coordinator for Social Action and Democratic Engagement, University of Maryland, College Park
  • Helen-Margaret Nasser – Director, Student Union and Intercultural Center – CUNY Kingsborough Community College
  • Diane McMahon – Faculty Director, College to Community Partnership Center – Allegany College of Maryland
  • Frank Wood – Bethune-Cookman University
  • Bonnie Chang – Voter Outreach & Early Voting Coordinator, City of Madison, Wisconsin Clerk’s office
  • Rolland Grady – Team Lead and Student, The University of Alabama Vote Everywhere Chapter
  • Blake Robinson- Georgia Southern University Student and Georgia Representative to the Student Advisory Board – Campus Vote Project
  • Naomi Barbour – Student, Eastern Michigan University

In all, they demonstrate the breadth of a movement that helped national student voter turnout grow at twice the rate of the national average during the last presidential election cycle, reaching a historic 66% in 2020, according to the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement – an achievement the SLSV Advisory Board intends to build on in 2024.

“Collaboration across diverse coalitions is at the heart of everything SLSV has achieved since our founding,” said SLSV Coalition Executive Director and Co-Founder Clarissa Unger. “With their breadth and depth of experience and perspectives, our 2024 Advisory Board exemplifies the strength of our Coalition, and the common desire we all share to meet the immense moment ahead of us this year.”

The 2024 SLSV Advisory Board forms at a time when college student voters have an opportunity to make an outsized impact on the United States electorate and our country as a whole. With approximately 19 million people enrolled at institutions of higher education nationwide, their turnout in federal, state, and local elections this year could dictate elected leaders at every level of government. The 2024 SLSV Advisory Board’s makeup – including representatives from major public four-year institutions, two-year community colleges, rural-serving institutions, and the HBCU Bethune-Cookman University – will help the SLSV Coalition build power and capacity for student vote leaders from all walks of life.

In addition to the 2024 Advisory Board, the SLSV Coalition selected its Executive Committee leadership for the year, electing University of Maryland Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement Chief Strategist and SLSV Coalition Co-Founder Sam Novey as Executive Committee Chair, and leadership coach and strategic consultant Pam Coleman as Secretary.

“These 16 individuals represent both the growth of the movement for full student voter participation, and the groups and leaders who built that movement,” said Novey. “Their vision and input will keep us grounded in the grassroots movements that have made student voters a force in our democracy, while ensuring we maintain the national reach to sustain that impact at scale.”
